Newby Organization 101

I apologize if these organizing posts are boring to some of you. :) Me? I could sit and read blogs and books about organizing all day! *sigh*staring dreamily into the distance* But I digress...

In my quest to get more organized this year, I've joined One Year to a More Organized Life from Brenda at Unsolicited Advice. (As a side note, I'm naturally an organized person *I think*, so I'm basically doing this for motivation!) :)

Along with Brenda's worksheets and "assignments" I've been doing a few other things around here to help make my life more simple. I'm all about simple. Thankfully, my husband is totally on board with this which makes it so much easier! :)

  • I've made a Daily/Weekly Schedule (which is my "Bare Minimum")
  • I've been doing my best to get rid of as much "stuff" as humanly possible. I've made a few rules for myself:
    • If said stuff doesn't fit where it should go - get rid of it!
      • We're not keeping any more books than can fit on the bookshelf we have. Same goes for toys. I'm enforcing the "One in, one out." rule. Of course, I have those few books that I'll always want to keep, and I'm sure when we start homeschooling our library will grow.
      • I'm in the process of getting rid of (or storing) any towels, bed sheets and washcloths that we can't use in a week. Our bathroom is TINY and I cannot afford the space that extra towels are taking up. I do laundry once a week, so there's really no need for there to be more than we can use in a week. As Amy just experienced, there are plenty of people in the world who don't have much and I feel silly hoarding having all this stuff!
      • I'm seriously considering joining Project 333. Peter Walsh says we only wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time.
    • If we can rent it from the library, Netflix or simply get the information online, get rid of it!
      • This covers cookbooks, movies (except some children's movies that I like to keep on hand) and cd's. Freecycle is a great way to get rid of stuff. You don't even have to leave the comfort of your own home. Swap.com is also a great website if you have video games, books, cd's or movies that you want to swap. You only pay shipping. We use it all the time and love it!
  • I've been spending less time online. (Not including this post - it's taking forever to write!)
    • I've "decluttered" my Reader and unsubscribed to the blogs I don't read anymore or just don't think are important right now. (If anyone has any ideas on how to keep track of the blogs I like but don't want in my Reader right now, I'd love to hear them!)
    • I deactivated my Facebook account, but after my guest post last Friday, Rachel said there were people sharing my post on FB, so being the humble girl that I am, I had to sign back in a check it out! I'm happy to report that since then though, I've only been on FB like, twice. :)

My biggest hope in implementing these new "house rules" is that I will have more TIME. Time to spend with my family, or crafting or... blogging. *cough*

Be very careful, then, how you live - not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every oppurtunity, because the days are evil. Eph 5:15-16

What are some time-freeing/organizing tips you've picked up along the way? I'd love to hear them!

  1. Catie...I've been having the SAME desires! Want to come help me? I'm just not sure where to start...and I don't know where to end. i don't know how far is too far, and I don't want to push my kids to the point of bitterness by getting rid of all their "things" that they love...they love too much- that is the problem. We have too many distractions from what is really important. Anyway, I'm waiting on the Lord for wisdom and moving slowly as He gives me guidance. I'm SO excited about this though because I KNOW He is faithful. Can't wait to see where He takes us next!

  2. Sounds so good, girl! After Heather's house, you are coming to help me right? ;) I'm feeling a little better after I took out like 3 garbage bags full of stuff before Christmas. Clothing is DEFINITELY an issue here as I don't know what to save for kiddos and for me I'm always in a range of like 8 sizes ;) heehee! (ok maybe not THAT many)! Shoes are another much needed area. The kids rooms are another area as well. We are doing better with movies & books. Ack! Ah well! It's a life long process, right? :)

  3. I love how you're decluttering things & time consumers. :) I cannot wait to declutter. Clutter is driving me crazy. I went through all the kids' toys. I had them put every single toy in bins. It was a gigantic pile. This is WAY TOO MUCH!!! So I weeded through them. I ended up with a huge outdoor garbage bag full of just trash... literal paper trash, broken toys, games and puzzle with missing pieces, happy meal toys, etc. Once I got all the set pieces (duplos, lincoln logs, etc.) sorted and put into new storage containers that stck nicely, I realized my kids do not really have an over-abundance. They just need some help staying creative by only getting out one of two sets at a time so we don't end up with piles of unsorted junk. I'll have to post pictures of it sometime.

The hard part is purging the adult stuff. My husband likes to hang on to everything. :P

  4. Bravo! What great ideas and progress! I think I'm already living project333, I probably rotate the same 15 shirts, 2 pants and two shoes per season. I'm not a clothes/shoes/accessories person (and my sisters say I dress like a farmer, so that's not necessarily a good thing). LOL
