For instance, now that we're out of debt *doing happy dance*, there are a few things that we'd like to buy. Like a new vacuum, a computer, a chair for our living room, a hot water heater, etc.
The problem we are now having is we don't want to spend any money!! HA! This is probably a good thing.
That said, there are the Top Ten items we splurge on:
- REAL maple syrup. There's absolutely no substitute for this. Period. We feel justified in spending the extra money on this because it's a bit healthier than the other kind of "maple flavored syrup". <--- I use that term loosely. Can you believe that when Aaron and I first started dating, I didn't like real maple syrup!? Thank goodness he converted me.
- Good coffee. We actually haven't really splurged on this too much while being in debt, but we will now. :) Just here and there.
- A specific brand of diapers for our wee one's tushie. We've tried the generic and the more expensive brands, and we really like the kind we use. It's worth the extra $3 to know our little baby is comfy and dry. :)
- A haircut for me. I cut my fam's hair, but I do spend about $30 to get mine cut. I don't do anything else to it and I still only go a couple of times a year, but I am willing to pay the price for a good haircut.
- Grape jam. This might seem like kind of a silly thing, but my hubby really doesn't like grape jelly and around here we don't have a generic grape jam, so we pay the extra for it.
- Buckwheat pancake mix. Two words -Yu! Mmy! I make homemade pancakes otherwise, but you can't beat buckwheat pancakes. It's a treat around here, so we don't buy these very often.
- Shoes - sometimes. Honestly, we buy a lot of shoes second hand.. some of you might think that's gross.. but we are very picky about it, if that's any consolation. BUT, we will splurge on really nice tennies (sp?) and work shoes for hubby. Those are important.
- Car seats & cribs. Well, mostly... We do own one hand-me-down carseat, but otherwise those are two things we buy new. Thank goodness you only have to purchase them once!
- Going out to eat. We do this a little more than we did before we were out of debt. (which hasn't been that long! HA!) But this is something Aaron and I really enjoy.
- Heating our home. Thank goodness my hubby goes along with this! We keep our thermostat set at 70 in the winter. I know, I know - all the money saving books, blogs, etc. tell you to only keep it at 68 or LOWER to save money. AGH! I simply can not survive under those conditions. Much too cold, people. Brr. I'm shivering just thinking about it!
So there you have it.

Please let me know what you think and leave a comment - they make my day! :)

I'm with you on splurging for diapers! We tried the cheaper ones and they didn't work for either of my boys. Ironically, Pampers worked for my first child but only Huggies worked for my second child.
ReplyDeleteI splurge on paper towels (Viva) and toilet paper (Cottonelle).
My husband makes me keep the temp at 66 at night. SIXTY SIX. Brrrrr.
ReplyDeleteYes, you should totally splurge for a haircut. Bad haircuts always equal more haircuts to fix them! I think one expensive haircut is worth it! :)
And WTG for being out of debt! We just got rid of our debt this year, too!

I'm totally with you on so many of these things! Especially the coffee, diapers, and the haircuts. Do you have Trader Joe's where you live? Their ground French Roast is awesome and only 3.99-4.99/bag.
ReplyDeletetotally with ya on the haircut!
ReplyDeleteI giggled at your vacuum comment, I have had more then a normal amount of posts on vacuums and we splurged and got a Dyson and it is worth every penny! Great list!
ReplyDeleteWe've been keeping our thermostat at 65. I would much prefer 72. But yeah, the money...
ReplyDeleteCongrats on being out of debt!
I totally agree with the going out to eat and buying certain brands of food - my husband HAS TO drink Tropicana OJ.
ReplyDeleteBut don't come over our house in the winter - it's at 65-68. We layer ;)
Amen to the comfy house temperature! Except in my case, it's to keep it COOL, not warm (we live in the Houston area). :) And isn't it funny how you can get particular on food items? I will never buy "snack crackers," I must always have Ritz, you know? It's okay to know what we want! :)
ReplyDeleteVery cute blog! You daughter is so cute! I so agree on the maple syrup, coffee, diapers, heat and haircuts! lol We live in MA and I'm freezing all the time. We keep ours at 70. It goes down to 68 at night but we justify it b/c we have parakeets and don't want them to freeze to death ;O) It used to go down to 65. I have a friend who's grossed out by hand me down shoes. It depends on who they are from to me. We are *thisclose* to being debt free this year! All thanks to Dave Ramsey!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you on the maple syrup! We just got back from visiting my parents in Vermont and it is sugaring season there, so we went to a sugar house where they make maple syrup. We got to do lots of taste tests on the 4 different varieties...yummy!
