Just thought I would post song lyrics here and there of songs that really speak to me.
Music itself speaks to me. Which is why I've finally decided to get rid of 99.9% of my "secular" music.
Now don't go getting all legalistic on me!!! Hear me out!
I understand that not everyone is like me, and music my not have an effect on you as much as it does me.
I didn't say I was never going to listen a secular song ever again, but for myself, I really don't feel the need to own much secular music. For one thing, as previously stated, music really speaks to me, and I find that if I listen to too much of it, I really start to feel "down". So, I just decided that since I really don't (or can't) listen to it very often, why own it??
I really like folk/singer/songwriter type music but when I was growing up we pretty much had Amy Grant or Michael W. Smith. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
But now there are so many great artists to choose from, there's really no need to search elsewhere. There's Jill Phillips, Sara Groves, Jars of Clay, Jimmy Needham, Caedmon's Call, Andrew Peterson, Derek Webb - just to name a few.
Anyhoo, here's a song that often speaks to me. It pretty much sums up how my faith has been. Enjoy.
Smell The Color Nine
by Chris Rice
I would take “no” for an answer
Just to know I heard You speak
And I’m wonderin’ why I’ve never
Seen the signs they claim they see
Are the special revelations
Meant for everybody but me?
Maybe I don’t truly know You
Or maybe I just simply believe
‘Cause I can sniff, I can see
And I can count up pretty high
But these faculties aren’t getting me
Any closer to the sky
But my heart of faith keeps poundin’
So I know I’m doin’ fine
But sometimes finding You
Is just like trying to
Smell the color nine
Now I’ve never ‘felt the presence’
But I know You’re always near
And I’ve never ‘heard the calling’
But somehow You’ve led me right here
So I’m not looking for burning bushes
Or some divine graffiti to appear
I’m just beggin’ You for some wisdom
And I believe You’re puttin’ some here
(Chorus)
But nine’s not a color
And even if it were you can’t smell a color
That’s my point exactly...
